The first president of the Bucharest ASTROCLUB
The romanian astronomy had two great popularizers, the first was VICTOR ANESTIN – publicist, which together with the Admiral Vasile Urseanu are the beginners of organization in our country of the activity of amateur astronomers during royalty.
ION CORVIN SANGEORZAN – astronomer and publicist is the second and we owe to resume and organization of this activity during the republic, in the new conditions.
After Romania has become the republic, the institutions have remodeled activities after the new political and economic realities, under the powerful influence of the Soviet Union in which the care and under the guidance of international agreements have established that there should be the territory of Romania and his people.
And development of the astronomy în Romania would be strongly influenced by the development of the astronomy the neighbor to the east, especially because of the reasons for the propaganda. The most scientific literature which we had at our disposal came from the authors of the Soviets, or translated in Russian and sometimes translated into French (it was a collection of treated mathematics and phisics in natural color-coded red). Not to mention the fact that, even publishing obtained from abroad to which I had access or we could do subscriptions, to be about the same origin (see Zemlia i Vselenia, Nauka i Jizni or Tinerimea Moldovei – Russian letters written in romanian). The impulse of granting public attention by the astronomy in our country as well as the rest of the socialist camp, has been given by the ASTRONAUTICS, with the launch of the first artificial satellite of the Earth, SPUTNIK 1 in 1957, as well as by the race to conquer of the cosmic space between USA and the Soviet Union.
To show the scientific activity of I. C. Sîngeorzan, must show first, as it has developed in the era Astronomical Obervatory in Bucharest. Because I had the privilege to know him personally, I. C. Sângeorzan marked me in a way in the evolution of my career, I will try to clear as I’ll be able, who was, how has evolved and which has been the role of ION CORVIN SINGEORZAN in romanian astronomy.
In the context of the romanian scientific shown above has developed and new Department of Astrophysics of the astronomcal observatory in Bucharest. Department has been set up and directed to death by prof. dr. docent CALIN POPOVICI, who after 1989 was to become an academician of the Romanian Academy in recognition of his scientific merits, teacher and populariser of life sciences. At the request of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and romanian astronomers have entered in the campaign to astronomical observation of artificial satellites of the earth (EAS) which have been run by the two countries in the race for the conquest of the cosmic space.
Visual observations were made at first by the researchers and astronomers from various collective, with BUSCH binoculars used in the artillery regiment, after the ephemeris received in the USSR.
The intensification of the cooperation and especially with astronomers University of Cluj and international within the framework of the COSPAR, outlined the idea of a collective expertise in the Bucharest observatory. The Department of astrophysics deals already in studying the Sun and were made the first steps in the observation of the photometric measurements of the variables stars, that has not been but a step toward the establishment of the Space Research Team in the division. It took with quickness of observation of cosmic artificial objects and even the processing of data from the astronomical observations.
It was past gradually to observe with the first photographic cameras XENON headlights, then with NAFA, as enhancing collaboration with astronomers Soviet team to be equipped with the camera AFU75 (similar to the American camera BAKER-NUN and French ANTARES). The principle was: fixed stars with satellite positions and measurable dara formed of astronomy measurable points.
The Spatial Research Team has been set up initially by detaching researchers Magdalena Carsmaru from the solar team and I. C. Sîngeorzan from the meridian team and ing. Alexandru Dinescu – geodez at the Military Academy. It was thus created a new nucleus of research, which in collaboration with astronomers at the University of Cluj had to carry out research in Romania and to participate in the work of the international scientific study of EAS – artificial objects which had been in orbit about the Earth.
As expected, there has been scientific works which were to be published in the Studies and Researches in Astronomy and Seismology, as well as abroad, first in publication Nabliudenia Iscustvenah Sputniki Zemlia – the Soviet Union, and later in the scientific literature of the socialist countries or west.
ION CORVIN SINGEORZAN was born in Bistrita from Bistrita-Nasaud county (a county with approximately. 400 persons with the same family name) in the year 1933 to 15 May and died in the USA (and there are about 15 people with this family name) in 2008 to 17 December following heavy suffering from an accident.
We know that during 1970 married MONICA SINGEORZAN (previously OPRESCU, deceased in 2019) – art critic and has a son ALCOR HYPERION CRISTIAN SINGEORZAN which is authorized translator english in Targoviste, home town of his mother.
Up to the end of the year 1981 of the accommodations and activated in Bucharest.
It has established in New York in 1982, has worked at the Institute OLEG CASSINI as written in the LIST of Romanian Astronomer (on the ASTRONOMICAL INSTITUTE OF THE ROMANIAN ACADEMY pages ?!? *) and was a member of the Academy of Sciences in New York.
It is a founding member of the association of the ROMANIAN DIASPORA.
The scientific activity.
On the period of study have no information, but definitely graduated from the higher education in the field of physico-mathematical studies as a result of which has been undertaken at the astronomcal observatory in Bucharest which was subordinated to the Romanian Academy. I say this whereas the selection and hiring of researchers was very carefully made, with respect to the level of studies and an average of top at graduation. Scientific researchers or astronomers (two different functions in the astronomical observatory) were usually graduates of the Phisico-Mathematical Faculty, even when the two related specialities in Bucharest were separated into different faculties (1962), with the same headquarters (on different floors) in the University of Bucharest to separate premises, mathematics in the old headquarters, and physics at Magurele.
In 1966 when I met as a student in practice, it was scientific researcher at the Department of Astrophysics headed by Academician Calin Popovici, therefore have the age of 33 years and therefore left the studies about. 10 years. I don’t think he had relatives in Bucharest, whereas he had lived alone on the Heptes Str. in a bachelor’s flat on the ground floor (I went to go together in the observations of the night). Hepites street was bordered at one end by the street where it was situated astronomcal observatory. Many of the researchers sought to reside in the vicinity of the observatory, to come easily to the astronomical observations in the night.
Looking for documentary material I found that perhaps the first scientific communication has made it in the „STUDIES AND RESEARCH OF ASTRONOMY AND SEISMOLOGY” Vol 2 year IV of 1959. with the title „On the determination of the radiant of the meteoric current”. On this topic has met with Virgil. V. SCURTU (then amateur astronomer by the tenth grade) in Iasi, about which I.C. SINGEORZAN said :
„As a matter of fact, the said method has been used with good results in Iasi by Virgil V. Scurtu, which has calculated the coordinates of the 47 stars in the area of the Perseide Radiant ”
Over time and especially when Virgil. V. Scurtu became professor of physics, have become friends, will cooperate with various occasions and especially in the framework of the work with amateurs astronomers.
He had 26 years when concerns of meteor researches. May had before scientific communications in collaboration or alone. In the same scientific communications magazine he is also collaborator in article „Optical observations of artificial satellites at the astronomical observatory in Bucharest. The base station 131”. Thus we see two of the main concerns in his research, namely meteor research and the very new at that time (SPUTNIK 1 was launched in 1957) research of EAS – artificial satellites of the earth.
Figure 1. Visual observation of the EAS
In the picture we see on Singeorzan I.C, in the center, on the right side of acad. Demetrescu and to the left of acad. Calin Popovici preparing the participants to observe the EAS by visual method.
The first article which treat the orbit a EAS has been published by ELLA MARCUS head of Meridian Team „On the orbit determination of an artifical satellite of the earth after observations” in which we see at 17.03.1958 among the observers of SPUTNIK 2 (1957β) and the I. C. Singeorzan.
Figure 2. SPUTNIK 2 observations
That participated and to other fields of research is testimony to the prize „GHE. LAZAR” in 1974 by the Romanian Academy was awarded and within the framework of the team headed by ELLA MARCUS, in order to achieve „Bucharest KSZ Catalog of faint stars for 1950.0″. Therefore the initial activity as a researcher started at ” Meridian circle” of the Astronomy department headed by Academician CONSTANTIN DRAMBA, participating in the observations necessary for the drawing-up of the catalogs of stars.

The complete list of scientific communications resulting from research published materials , we see in the Table 1 below:
Table 1. Scientific works
In this period of concerns for the EAS, I received, when I was already astronomer at the SPACE RESEARCH TEAM in the astronomical observatory of Bucharest, to remember the nights spent together as the student in practice, a unique image (technical transposition on paper in black/white after processing of photographic film was particularly laborious at that time) photographed by I.C. Singeorzan personnel in 1963, artificial satellite of the Earth Explorer 19 performed with the XENON camera of the observatory.
Figure 4: Photography of EAS Explorer 19 (front/back)
Maybe this gift was a manifestation of nostalgia after the EAS field, which he left for the activity of the popularising astronomy. The style of work on the astronomical observations and it will keep still, i.e. the strictly scientific, with the pleasure running at night or observations of the sun, but this time is not restricted by a plan of research or the provisions of the heads of the hierarchical superiors. I think that the spirit of independence and love for the fellow humans made him to choose for the next stage of his career work directly with the public, through conferences, books, as muzeograph-director position of the Popular Astronomical Observatory of Ana Ipatescu boulevard in Bucharest.
The activity of popularizer and publicist.
The beginning of the work with amateurs astronomers is located in 1967, when it was requested as the scientific researcher at the House of Culture of 11 June Str., in the same district of Bucharest as well as the astronomical observatory of the Romanian Academy, for public conferences on topics of astronomy, Astronautics and the scientific atheism. Acad. Calin Popovici who was head directly, encouraged him to respond to requests for public conferences in Bucharest and in the country, as he saw that he has the skills necessary and even is attracted to this activity.
The communist propaganda put high price and not begrudge the time and financial means in order to inform the public with the purpose of indoctrination.
We find, however, on ION CORVIN SANGEORZAN involved and in work with the public in Bucharest and in the country, within the framework of the SRSC – the society for spreading science and culture.
Figure 5. I. C. SANGEORZAN and trainees of the Popular University at the astronomical observatory of the Romanian Academy
In the picture on the terrace of the central body of the observatory, near future Satellites 1131 Station, we see with his back, with his hat as he pleases to wear, explain to the trainees how to visually noticed an artificial satellite of the earth. To see the extent and the attention shall be granted for the spread of this scientific constraints, play below a fragment of the SRSC on the year 1964.
„From year to year, the activity of the subsidiary improves, running in particular
on the line of deepening work and lift it from the point of view of quality. A wide popularity enjoyed by the astronomy department and cosmonautic exposures,
the conferences in the field of biology, medicine, social sciences, with themes that : „The sun and the solar system”, „the land and place in the universe”, „The origin and the evolution of human rights”, „life on Earth”, „the origin of the language and training the romanian people”, the conferences related to the celebration of 500 years of attestation documentary evidence of Bucharest city, the combating misticism, information rich in domestic and international policy, etc.in the trim. II and IV of the year 1959, were held a total of 4.991 events 596.150 participants
SCIENTIFIC AND CULTURE
Among the people in Bucharest
Between the years 1949-1964
The GELCU MAKSUTOVICI”
Being well known in the field of popularising services, has been offered and the space needed to set up the club „Friends of Cosmos” at the House of Culture of the district 5 (now district 4). Attracted in this club so students or researchers young people with a passion for knowledge of the universe (Gh, Vass, Al. Dumitrescu, H. Alexandrescu. N. Radulescu, F. Nichitiu, A. Novac, etc) and amateur astronomers of various occupations and educational level (commander C. Filoti, S. Mateescu, A. Enger, ing. I. Strobach, L. Dimiu, etc.). I was drawn to this club since its establishment as a student, then that professor of mathematics after graduation of the faculty. I attended the first club magazines „ANDROMEDA” with articles typed in writing and with black/white photos (on the cover made from cardboard filed have attached a picture of the constellation). I. C. Singeorzan have ambition to launch the first romanian amateur magazine in the communist regime, as a continuation of the magazine „ORION” for many years ago on time and under the leadership of VICTOR ANESTIN. The magazine was launched in a festive frame at the House of Culture (I exposed and some panels with philatelic marks related to the astronomy and astronautics). Attended a numerous public what was beyond the capacity of the conference room. This participation convinced him of the success of such approaches and we already presented a plan to the completion of the movement for the amateur astronomers centralised at Popular Astronomical Observatory of Ana Ipatescu boulevard which on that time was called the „Experimental Sciences Museum”. Supported by Academician Calin Popovici who put his shoulder to the rehabilitation of this important cultural objective of the municipality and once with the departure of the Bacau of Matei Alecsescu muzeograph, has been created the conditions of moving of I. C. Singeorzan from Astronomical Observatory of the Romanian Academy to the Popular Astronomical Observatory (the new name of the objective) appointed as an muzeograph-coordinator.
The perfect approach corresponded to the desire of central any activity. It was at that time about the only cultural objective in this area on an extremely extended area of the country. I C. Singeorzan was building on the first floor, an office not too spacious, which now after the rehabilitation completed in 2019 (was renamed astronomical observatory „Admiral V. URSEANU”) has disappeared, on that column being installed a modern elevator useful for people with disabilities or elderly.
In the new conditions amateurs astronomers from all over the country, in Iasi to Arad or Baia Mare could become members of the newly set up ASTROCLUB CENTRAL of BUCHAREST (which has assimilated the amateurs of FRIENDS of COSMOS club, which have become the founding members). Even reeditet ANDROMEDA magazine in 1969 this time with the logo of the ACB on the cover. In 1970 published the article „The first session of the Astronomy Popular scientific observer in Bucharest” in Vol. 1 Tom 15, 113-114 page of the magazine STUDIES AND RESEARCH OF ASTRONOMY.
The logo is his own creation of president I. C.Singeorzan which have talent to do this (SUN,VENUS and the romanian symbol caused by Constantin Brancusi), but also the authority to impose among members.
Figure 6. The CENTRAL BUCHAREST ASTROCLUB logo
I must say here a few words about the character and persons who have held this to influence the activity of amateur astronomer for a prolonged period of time, between 1968 and 1982 when he chooses to leave Romania.
Physically he was a small man, not exceeded 1,60m. It was quite thin (not to look too small), light brown, blond hair toward the not too rich and pretty spanatic (for that was the impression of public and let your hair longer and a barbison, whom the associate and sometimes a pipe from which the smoked less, but more than the picture). Do not know of him ever to be worn dark suits, his favorite being a sand suit with vertical stripes. Working with the public, the representation demanded her to always wear suit of clothes with tie and seldom lavaliera. It was a great politeness to anyone and even courteous with the feminine. I have ever heard shouting, speaking brusquely or arguing. I believe that everyone felt better in his presence. Never did case that he has been scientific researcher, not boasted of works or its observations and in particular create the impression that it wants to raise anyone at his level of astronomical knowledge in the field. Has always had an inclination toward the history of the Romanian and astronomical universe and even toward arheoastronomie.
Now seeking to extend the areas of interest in any chapter of astronomy, especially practical side, they tried to put in value by the presence and concerns the Popular Astronomical Observatory whose coordinator became. An exhibition was reorganized in several rooms for the public, keeping the dome room for public conferences. He completed the exhibition even with the layout of a skeleton (the famous necropola COSTICA) in the case of Cernica Monastery abbot, where at the request of acad. H. DAICOVICIU has conducted research and calculations on the orientation of the graves with sunrise at the age in which have died. Received donations for exhibition with any materials related to the history of the romanian astronomy. Even i have donated two magazines NATURE with articles written by the first woman doctor in astronomy at the Sorbonne MARIA TEOHARI .
The exhibition was a character both astronomical teaching on the development in general, as well as a particular character on the historical evolution of the romanian astronomy since ancient times.
Figure 7. ION CORVIN SINGEOZAN on „Miss BERTHA” – the main scope of the Pupular Astronoical Observatory
The journalistic activity started when working in research by 1963 and a continuous and in 1980. Below we see a chronological table of books of greater or smaller scale, published in collaboration or as a single copyright in the various publishing houses and editorial collections. The publishing houses apreciate the subjects, since it was the time when the astronautics has developed dramatically, as a result of human output in the outer space. Advanced of the cosmonautic conquests have led to an increased interest of the population for the composition of the universe.
Romania’s communist leadership to take advantage of this interest for tying him ateista propaganda and encourage the publication of scientific books in that arose and scientific ateist comments.
Table 2. Publications Scientific Advisory
Figure 8. The publications of I.C. Singeorzan
His books have become a great aid to astronomers amateurs and for the general public avid data and images on cosmos.
Amateurs Astronomers have found at popular astronomy observatory in Bucharest a location in which to manifest itself on a weekly basis, in accordance with conditions and adequate ambiance, with a president who having qualifications in the field of astronomical astronomy and practices, to reveal the locally and internationally. Weekly meetings were an opportunity for scientific conferences to which were invited the romanian public figures as well as includes reputed scientists, writers in the field of scientific and amateur astronomers with experience. Thus increased level of knowledge about the universe.
He had become the place where any inhabitant of the country is able to address for the explanations and the number of members of the CENTRAL ASTROCLUB Bucharest has grown a lot. Have been organised astronomical expeditions in mountain areas where the conditions of observation of the sky were appropriate to the purpose for which they were organized. Ion Corvin Singeorzan organised in 1973 on the occasion of the international manifestations COPERNIC „500” a trip of the ACB members at Warsovia at a meeting of the IAU (the ordinary taking to Melburne). The conditions for a trip abroad in the communist era were particularly difficult. The few members who were able to participate have submitted impressions during a meeting open to the public.
Figure 9. The ACB at the excursion Warsovia Copernic „500”
Figure 10. The meetings of the ACB ocazioned by ”Copernic 500″
Both the members of the ACB trip and participation of researchers astronomers in Bucharest (N. Radulescu astronomer and a member of the ACB participating together with the researchers astronomical observatory of the Romanian Academy) or the country (astrophysicist V.V. Scurtu – Iasi, individually), have occasioned a long periada meetings on topics of astronomy organized in a program 1973-1974 together with the University of Bucharest.
We also see the program of (from which we presented only the beginning) as broad, varied and full of scientific information was the activity of the ACB. The structure of the referentilor supporting practical exposures or meetings reflect both the composition of the members of the ACB and the variety of their professions. We see in the program together with her husband and MONICA SINGEORZAN – art critic and a member of the ACB still before marriage.
As a centralized structure ACB corresponded both to other astronomy clubs in the country, as it was the Circle „V. ANESTIN” in Cluj-Napoca coordinated by R. IRIMES and passionate about astronomy, such as the physicist V.V. Scurtu who often came from Iasi to participate with exposures at the meetings of the ACB .
Figure 11. ROMULUS IRIMES (club president V. ANESTIN Cluj) at the meeting of the ACB (on the lefts I.C. Singeorzan and at the extreme right G. Stanila Dir. Adj. Observatory of the Academy)
We can see in the letter of an amateur astronomer, who were the problems which senses this category of passionate knowledge of the universe, and how much they need guidance from experts in the field.
Figure 11. The letter of an amateur astronomer
After 1980 the living conditions in the communist Romania led by the dictator Ceausescu have deteriorated more and many Romanians have searched for any possible opportunity to leave the boundaries of the country. Many times an international manifestation to be able to obtain a visa of departure, constituted an opportunity for escape of the socialist camp.
I saw he older concerns regarding arheoastronomia (the skeleton of Cernica Monastery of the exhibition in Popular Astronomical Observatory) which, after acad. Daicoviciu it has continued with archaeologist Gh. Cantacuzino as we see below in the subpage of a communication of archeology , in 1976, the first fragment of Figure 12, which together with another fragment (a reference) attests the concerns in the field and participation in the profile Congress in 1981 in Mexico.
Figure 12. Indication of his work arheoastronomie I.C. Singeorzan in 1976, 1981
In 1982 after the participation at the congress of the X UISPP (International Union of Prehistoric Sciences and Protoistorice) in Mexico City 19-24 ºC October 1981 and Ion Corvin Singeorzan chose renegade during which it was finally in New York.
About the activity in the diaspora know only that he was a researcher (see note at the end of the article) and member of the Academy of Sciences in New York. His last address was Brooklyn, New York 11237, USA.
In the words of some people who have known, we know that after X UISPP CONGRESS in Mexico to which participated in the year when he left Romania, it would have gone to New York, where it has been established in 1982, living in a one-room flat in a modest block of approx. 100 floors. On the way that and in the city of death, has suffered many financial difficulties, having various occupations and keeping out of the earnings provided by horoscoape astrologice sought by the American public.
Talking in a meeting of the Bucharest ASTROCLUB last year with Mrs. Prof. ERICA SUHAY about the time when the president was I. C. SINGEORZAN, I told him that I am going to write an article about him and had the kindness to put at my disposal the last letter sent from the both of his wife and son MONICA and CRISTI, as well as a photo (last) on a bridge of New York.
Figure 13. The letter from the hospital and the last photo of I.C. SINGEORZAN
Whereas the text of the letter is in english and seems to be dictated to someone in the hospital reserve where he was. I have given below a translation free in the style used in Romania. Notice that the text is rather short, and sometimes with incomplete information, but given his paralyzed without being able to move the hands or feet in the accident which efectat cervico-spinala area, is explained. He seemed confident for a few days which had to pry him from death.
My dear Monica and Cristi,
Thank you for your letter, beautiful pictures and for the fact that he will think about me. Also thanks to Professor ERIKA SUHAY that did not forget me.
You asked me how long I’ve been director of the astronomy observatory. It was in the period 1967-1982, when I came to the United States.
You asked about political asylum. Before 1947, starting with 1957 we were scientific researcher at the Romanian Academy. Concerning the scientific my work as the author. When I have a possibility to send you as Mrs. SUHAY some papers published in the United States.
I have been hospitalized at Princeton University Medical Center and I made a serious operation to the vertebral column in the neck. Are under medical observation in physical therapy. I hope that after a period of time to be able to use his hands, to go, but this process is very slow.
I appreciate the good wishes of yours and Cristi, you transmit them and I’m at my turn. I wish you Monica, and Cristi’s and the dna. Suhay, much health and success in everything you do.
I hope that one day, I cannot say when you visit in Romania, to see you again. I pray for all and I want to wish you joy and good times.
With the well,
CORVIN 15 September 2008
We believe that he activated in the diaspora organized in the USA because I have found him on the web site the Romanian Diaspora between the founding members.
Figure 14. The founding members of the Romanian Diaspora
We find in the list on the third column, the fourth at the end where we place marked by a rectangle. Notice that between the founding members is no longer Gheorghe Zamfir, Irinel Popescu, Ovidiu Lipan Tandarica names well known to the general public in Romania. The organization shall have the founding members from all corners of the world from Canada to New Zealand, not missing as was the case the Republic of Moldova.
ION CORVIN SINGEORZAN had both scientific concerns the theoretical and practical Astronomy (meteors, catalogs of stars, artificial satellites of earth – 9 titles and participation Congress IAU 1073), arheoastronomie (work and participation UISPP Congress 1981), popularising scientific knowledge (conferences, meetings with the public for practical astronomy, 7 published books), and creator of associations of amateur astronomers (CENTRAL ASTROCLUB of Bucharest and magazine ANDROMEDA), so a wide range of activities carried out with dedication, passion and elegance.
We owe to put at the disposal of the Romanian public the data that we hold on top figures in the history of the romanian astronomy, because amateurs astronomers and the young generation have models for increasing the intellectual property.
Perhaps it would be more to be added regarding the life and activity of this astronomer barely 76 years when he died, like te undersigned at the time of the completion of this article, which was the first president of the Bucharest ASTROCLUB.
* Note: we don’t know who provided the information with the workplace Institute OLEG CASSINI from THE LIST of ROMANIANS ASTRONOMERS and then taken in the media romaneaca, but we believe that the information is incorrect for the following reasons:
A. OLEG CASSINI Institute in New York dubbed and FIT (Fashion Institute Technology) is a renowned Institute, the largest in the world which has as its object the design of the garment. It has nothing to do with astronomy, his mother’s grandfather Oleg Aleksandrovich Loiewski (real name of OLEG CASSINI) being the nephew of the famous DOMENICO CASSINI.
B. Given that the last document on which we had at his disposal, ION CORVIN SANGEORZAN has been admitted and died at Princeton University Hospital in the south of the New York, believe that soon work would have been Princeton University in the same suburban town, which has among faculties and ASTROPHYSICS. As a matter of fact would justify and covering the costs of hospitalization and after death.
